The Ginkgo tree, also known as the maidenhair tree, is native to China and is considered one of the oldest living tree species on Earth. It has distinctive fan-shaped leaves and is often planted as an ornamental tree in cities due to its resistance to pollution and disease.
Gingko contains powerful antioxidants such as flavonoids and terpenoids, which help protect cells from oxidative stress. Its medicinal value is primarily linked to improving blood circulation, especially to the brain, and protecting nerve cells.
The leaves of the Gingko tree are most commonly used for medicinal purposes, usually in dried or extract form. The seeds have also been used traditionally, but they can be toxic if not properly prepared.
Ginkgo is most widely used to support brain function—including memory, focus, and mental clarity. It has been used to help with symptoms of dementia, Alzheimer's disease, and poor circulation, such as cold hands and feet. Some people also use it to help reduce anxiety.
Gingko can interact with blood-thinning medications, so it should be used with caution by people taking those drugs.
Fun Fact: The tree is so ancient it is considered a "living fossil" and has existed in its current form for over 200 million years.
